Japan, Germany and France competed in bidding for Australia’s next-generation submarine development plan. The Australian government decided to conduct a joint development on the submarine with French companies. This recent business competition was the first large-scale commercial deal since the change of Japan’s arms export policy by the Abe Cabinet.

The U.S. air transport support began for the Kumamoto Earthquake disaster areas where aftershocks continue. In the disaster areas suffering severe disruption of transportation network, local government officials, police, firefighters, the Self Defense Forces and volunteers continue search and rescue operations, recovery activities and evacuee support. Under such emergency situation caused by sudden major disasters, support from a foreign country is greatly appreciated. However, it is incomprehensible that some criticize the U.S. forces from ideological standpoints despite the fact that those forces are assisting Japanese disaster victims experiencing hardships.
G7 foreign ministers’ meeting was held in Hiroshima and concluded after adopting the Hiroshima Declaration on Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament.
The Nuclear Security Summit was held in Washington, D.C. with participation of heads of states and others from more than 50 countries in the world. The summit adopted a joint statement which focused on prevention of terrorism using nuclear materials as a lasting priority.
The security legislations which allow limited exercise of Japan’s right to collective self-defense went into effect. Although some think that “improvement of defense legislations has been completed,” the legislations still contain many defects in comparison to security legislations of major countries in the world. Continuous improvement of legislations should not be neglected in the future for national security assurance.
